Melbourne’s favorite place to go for food and wine is the huge Yarra Valley, which has been attracting people from Victoria and far away for many years. With its rolling vineyards and quaint towns surrounded by what seems like a never-ending strip of the pristine Australian bush, this part of Victoria is full of places to go on exciting adventures. The best part is that it’s only an hour from Melbourne’s city center.

Healesville has some of the best food and wine in the world. There are also hipster bars, galleries, and stores in the area. You can expect to find a real country town with lots of charm and natural beauty in Warburton. And Marysville is a natural paradise where you can hike, bike, and ski all the time.

In between, you’ll find roads that wind through ancient forests, hiking and biking trails that go on forever, and some of the best markets, cellar doors, cafes, and restaurants in the world.

But for us, the Yarra Valley is all about the little things: the slow drives through the forest, the sneaky sausage roll (in our case, a veggie one) at a country bakery, or an off-the-beaten-path cellar door selling organic wines. It’s about walking through lush green forests, cozy nights by the fire, and sipping Lambrusco at farmers’ markets on summer nights.

Where Is The Yarra Valley, And What Is It?

The famous Yarra Valley in Victoria is about 60 km east of Melbourne’s central business district.

The Yarra Valley is a popular weekend getaway for people in Melbourne. It has rolling vineyards, small towns, dense forests, and winding roads.

The Wurundjeri people have lived in the Yarra Valley for the past 30,000 years, so it is their home. As soon as Europeans moved into the area, things changed quickly. Logging, mining, and farming became the main industries in the newly formed state.

The Ryrie brothers planted the first vines in the Yarra Valley in 1838. It didn’t take long for the area to be seen as a great place to grow wine. Since then, viticulture has grown quickly as the world learned about the area’s wine. Today, it is one of the best places in the world to grow wine in a cold climate. Wineries like Soumah, De Bortoli, Domaine Chandon, Yering Station, and Payten & Jones are known all over the world.

The Yarra Valley now attracts Victorians and everyone else with its great food, wine, and natural setting.

Where To Go And What To Do In The Yarra Valley

Try Out Well-known Wines

The Yarra Valley is one of the oldest places in Australia where wine is made, and you can’t go there and not try some of the amazing wines made there.

The famous rolling hills of this region are filled with large wineries and small-scale winemakers. The green mountains in the background make for one of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Victoria.

This part of the Yarra Valley is famous for its chardonnay and pinot noir and well-known for its shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. There are so many things to try here! It’s easy for oenophiles or anyone else to spend the whole day tasting wines from the area, driving from cellar door to cellar door to try a variety of world-class drops.

When To Visit The Yarra Valley

We love the Yarra Valley in every season if we’re being honest.

In the summer, when Melbourne is very hot, the nearby mountains and Yarra river offer a welcome break.

In the winter, Donna Buang or Lake Mountain are great places to get away from the city because they have snow-covered trees and toboggan runs. It’s also a great time to book a cozy Airbnb, light a fire, and relax with a glass of pinot noir.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit because the weather is stable, the hills are full of color, and there are far fewer people.

But for us, the best time to go to the Yarra Valley is in the fall. There’s something about the burnt-orange forests and vineyards, the mist that always covers the valley in the morning, the cooler temperatures and damp forests, and the feeling of the end of summer that makes it feel a little more special.
