Yarra Valley Winery Region Story

In 1838 the first vines were planted in Victoria’s oldest wine region, the Yarra Valley. During the mid to late 1800s, plantings continued; however, due to the growing popularity of fortified wines, the Yarra Valley ceased to produce Wine by the end of 1921.

It wasn’t until 1963 that winemaking activity relaunched with the planting of vines at Yarra Valley and was subsequently followed over the next decade with the emergence of other now iconic wineries such as Yering Farm Wines, Tokar Estate, Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, Four Pillars Gin Distillery, Coldstream Brewery, Yering Station Winery, Soumah Wines, Payten & Jones and the re-establishment of two of the valleys original founding wineries St Huberts and Yeringberg.

Since the mid-80s, the Yarra Valley has experienced solid growth and is now recognized as one of the world’s premium cool climate wine regions. Due to our region’s varied microclimates, the Yarra Valley can produce outstanding examples of Sparkling Wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Shiraz (Syrah), and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region varieties are not limited to the styles that have just been outlined.

Located an easy one-hour drive from the Melbourne CBD, the Yarra Valley is perfectly situated for a short day trip. With many outstanding restaurants, cafes, and world-class Wine, the Yarra valley will have you coming back for more.
